Hi, I am thinking about who to chose as the second examiner. Is it possible to chose somebody I have already published with? I.e. the person is a co-author on my papers that i will use for my publicationbased dissertation.

It is possible to choose a second examiner you already have published with. If necessary, the third examiner should be external and you my not have published with her*him.

For publishing my defense, if I choose to publish electronically do I also have to submit printed paper copies? (From the ub-homepage I understand that I don't have to hand in any printed version, but my colleagues say that they had to do this. Did the rules change?)

Yes, the rules changed. It is not necessary to submit printed versions of your dissertation anymore.

I sucessfully finished my oral defense yesterday. What are the next steps? Can I publish my dissertation now?

1. If your examination Committee order changes in your dissertation, work on it.
2. If ordered, show the changes to your chairperson.
3. Your chairperson send us all the documents.
4. We type all your data into DocGS – now you can follow the process in DocGS.
5. We send your documents to Ms. Stinzel at the doctoral office in Munich.
6. Ms. Stinzel contacts you for the title page and information about the publication process.
7. You publish your dissertation https://www.ub.tum.de/en/publishing-dissertation
8. Show the confirmation about publication to Ms. Stinzel.
9. Your doctoral diploma is printed and send to us.
10. The dean signs your doctoral diploma.
11. We send the your doctoral diploma to your supervisor.
12. Your supervisor give your doctoral diploma to you.

Muss der Titel meiner Dissertation identisch sein mit dem Eintrag „Thema ((vorläufiger) Arbeitstitel oder Thema der Dissertation)“ in DocGS?

Nein, dies ist wie beschrieben der vorläufige Titel. Erst beim Einreichen Ihrer Dissertation muss der endgültige Titel feststehen.

Kann mein Lehrstuhl den gültigen Arbeitsvertrag beglaubigen, um diesen dann zum TUM Center for Study and Teaching zu schicken?

Der Lehrstuhl kann bestätigen, dass das Original mit der Kopie übereinstimmt. Für die Einreichung der Dissertation reicht das vollkommen aus. (Info von Frau Stinzel aus dem Promotionsamt)

Can I read the reviews of my examiners?

"After completion of the doctoral examination process the candidate will have the opportunity to inspect the examination records within one year." TUM Regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees (§16 (3))

Access BEFORE your oral defence is not possible.

Ich hatte Vorgestern meine mündliche Prüfung und würde gerne die nächsten Schritte planen. Kann ich schon etwas tun oder muss ich für die Veröffentlichung der Dissertation noch auf ein offizielles "Go" warten?

Nun müssen Sie sich leider noch etwas gedulden. Zunächst müssen die Unterlagen, bei uns ankommen. Wir geben dann alle Daten in DocGS ein und dann können Sie den Fortschritt dort auch wieder verfolgen. Anschließend senden wir Ihre Unterlagen zu Frau Stinzel ins Prüfungsamt. Diese meldet sich dann wegen des Titelblattes und der Veröffentlichung bei Ihnen. Warten Sie bitte bis Sie von Frau Stinzel hören. Erst dann können Sie Ihre Dissertation veröffentlichen.

Gibt es Vorgaben bzw. Empfehlungen bzgl. Ausdruck der Dissertation: Schriftart, Zeilenabstand, Doppelseitig vs. Einseitiger Druck?

Außer dem Inhalt des Titelblatts (Schriftart und Format frei wählbar, muss aber auf Deutsch sein - außer Titel natürlich) gibt es für das Format der Dissertation keine Formatvorlagen.

Criteria for publication-based dissertation at the TUM School of Life for doctoral candidates with entry in the doctoral list BEFORE 01.10.2021

Ist ein Zweitprüfer (Angehöriger einer anderen Hochschule - z. B. Universität in Deutschland) prüfungsberechtigt, wenn er bereits im Ruhestand ist, aber die Prüfung machen möchte?

Professoren im Ruhestand sind gemäß §10 der TUM Promotionsordnung prüfungsberechigt und können für die Prüfungskommission vorgeschlagen werden. Jede Prüfungskommission wird jedoch individuell geprüft und muss durch den School Council genehmigt (bestellt) werden.

Um die Arbeit einzureichen zu können, ist das Titelblatt (obiger Link) auszufüllen - dort sind Angaben für den Zweitprüfer und den Vorsitzenden zu machen: sind diese Angaben meine Vorschläge für die Prüfungskommission? 

Ja, das sind die Mitglieder Ihrer Prüfungskommission. Das Titelblatt muss nach dem Rigorosum/mündlichen Prüfung aber nochmal neu gemacht werden (Datumsangaben zur Annahme der Dissertation), so dass die Prüfenden auch erst dann eingefügt werden können.

I am writing my thesis in English. Do I need to provide a translation of the abstract in German or is it enough to have it in English?

This case is not detailed described in the TUM regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees. In §6 (6) is written: " it [the dissertation] must include an abstract of the content and a complete bibliography of the literature and other information sources used." Further Information

We recommend to talk to your supervisor about this issue.

My examination committee suggested to perform my examination online via Zoom. Can all members of the committee join via Zoom? Is there a minimum number of people that should join physically (including me)? Is it possible that one member joins physically and the rest via Zoom?

Yes, the ZOOM-Meeting can be completly online. So all participants can join virtually.

Gibt es Erfahrungswerte wie lange die Ausstellung der Urkunde dauert?

Nachdem Sie Ihre Dissertation veröffentlicht haben, melden Sie dies dem Promotionsamt. Daraufhin wird Ihre Urkunde ausgestellt und an uns geschickt. Wir lassen dann den Dekan unterschreiben und senden die unterschriebene Urkunde dann an Ihre/n Doktormutter/vater, welche/r diese an Sie übergibt. Der ganze Prozess dauert ca. 2 bis 3 Wochen.
