Abstract

Games and game elements are used to improve apps in distinctive fields such as productivity, finance, health, education, sustainability, news, and entertainment. However, they are often used with the focus on increasing user engagement, disregarding user’s well-being. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to explore how game elements can be used to support user’s well-being. To achieve that, a prototype of a mobile app for house plant care is developed. Based on the development process, design principles based on game elements are suggested and evaluated. The principles include recommendations on us- ing story-world, the concept of flow, game-like visuals, and good notification practices.
