Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic, a crisis of global scale, confronts humanity with many challenges and leaves barely any field untouched. In education, teachers and students are trying to adapt to the recent shift towards virtual teaching in an attempt to combat the virus' propagation. This sudden influx of novel approaches and technological solutions holds many implications for the present and future. In order to understand the potential challenges in existing social contexts, provoked by the introduction of new, possibly augmenting, technologies and to determine design spaces and conclusions to be considered for their design, a user study consisting of a survey and an interview was conducted. Its results, examined with a thematic analysis and discussed, yielded key themes and design spaces informing future design processes. Aspects, such as Fairness, Privacy or Interpersonal Connections were identified as highly valued factors, when it comes to how students perceive the solutions in place and what expectations they hold towards future technological advances. Lastly, to illustrate and explore the practical use of the identified implications, a prototype application was developed.
